A 36-year-old man with dual Hungarian-Romanian citizenship was arrested in Budapest, who was wanted by the FBI (the American Federal Bureau of Investigation) because he and his companions were suspected of blackmailing a couple in the United States by injecting a virus back in 2007, the National Investigation Bureau of the Emergency Police announced ( NNI) on Thursday on police.hu.

The gang allegedly tied up the woman and her partner, held them at bay with a knife and a gun, then injected them with what they claimed was a deadly virus. The delivery of the antibody was tied to a large sum of money. However, the bank branches of the victims – having learned from previous similar cases – refused to perform the atypical transfers. The perpetrators then gave the victims sleeping pills and fled in their car.

The perpetrators were identified, and at the request of the FBI, the New Haven court issued an international arrest warrant against them in 2012. According to the NNI statement, Stefan Alexandru B., who was just captured, was wanted by the FBI as one of the most dangerous criminals. Federal investigators also offered a $10,000 reward for the lead. However, the authorities have been searching for the man with dual Hungarian-Romanian citizenship since 2007 in vain. The case took a turn when the investigators of the Miskolc Police Department received information that the man was presumably staying in Hungary. The Borsod police requested the help of the NNI’s target investigation department to arrest the man, the raid took place on Tuesday.

The arrested man was leaving a Budapest beach when he was captured. Stefan Alexandru B. was taken into custody, the court will decide on his extradition.
