In the presence of President Katalin Novák, Hungary’s national flag was raised on August 20th, the national holiday, on Saturday morning in Budapest, in Kossuth Lajos square in front of the Parliament.

The flag was raised to the sounds of the National Anthem by the honor unit of the Hungarian Armed Forces. The central military band and the national equestrian honors unit participated in the event. In addition to Katalin Novák, other public dignitaries, as well as the Minister of National Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, the commander of the Hungarian Defense Forces, members of the government, representatives of other state and military organizations, members of the diplomatic corps, and hundreds of interested people took part in the ceremony.

After the flag is raised, the candidates for military officers take their oath. August 20th is an official state holiday to commemorate the founding of the state and King St. István. Celebrations, bread consecrations and many other events have been organized across the country, but they can be threatened by thunderstorms. Therefore, the National Meteorological Service asks those preparing for events to follow the weather and danger signals.

The air parade planned for the inauguration of the military officer candidates will be cancelled. The operative group responsible for the safe conduct of the holiday meets continuously throughout the day, monitors the development of the weather situation, and, if necessary, decides on the steps necessary to hold outdoor events safely. The board is expected to decide on holding the evening fireworks at its meeting starting at noon.
