August 20th – Fireworks are Postponed in Budapest

Local News

Due to the expected thunderstorms and showers, the operative board responsible for the safe conduct of the national holiday on August 20th decided to postpone the holiday fireworks at its noon meeting on Saturday.

Zoltán Kovács, head of the board, wrote in a statement delivered to MTI: based on the latest, comprehensive forecast of the National Meteorological Service, as well as the evaluation of the situation by the fireworks and event organizers, the operative team came to the conclusion that it is not safe to hold the fireworks planned for 9 p.m. The fireworks are scheduled to be held next Saturday night at 9:00 p.m.

In addition, the operative board suggested that the festive mass, which now starts at 5 p.m., be held in the St. Stephen’s Basilica instead of Szent István square. Instead of the procession, a musical prayer hour should be held in the basilica, in front of the displayed relic of St. Right, wrote Zoltán Kovács, repeatedly requesting that those interested should find detailed information about St. Stephen’s Day events and weather conditions on the application and website of the program series, as well as on the website of the National Meteorological Service, and through media reports.
