The Debrecen Court of Appeal sentenced Tamás Sándor Varga, former economic advisor of FIDESZ to 3.5 years in prison for tax fraud of half a billion forints.
The Debrecen court upheld the decision of the first instance court: it finally sentenced the primary defendant and the secondary co-defendant each to 3.6 years in prison and finally acquitted 21 other defendants. Prosecutions against Varga started in the 1990’s for fraud, embezzlement, smuggling and other offences. He left Hungary in 1999 and was hiding abroad until 2005 when he was captured by the police.
